Celebrating Setsubun at Kinderland

２月３日、日本語クラスでは節分集会が行われました。

節分には季節を分けるという意味があり、昔から季節の変わり目には悪い鬼(邪気)が現れると言われています。

On 3rd February, our Japanese class celebrated Setsubun, a traditional Japanese seasonal festival. Setsubun means “dividing the seasons,” and it is said that evil spirits (oni) appear at the turning of the seasons.

パネルシアターを通じて節分の由来を学び、「鬼は外、福は内」に込められた意味についても理解を深めました。
Through a panel theatre presentation, the children learned about the origins of Setsubun and deepened their understanding of the meaning behind “Oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi” (“Out with the demons, in with good fortune”).

子どもたちはパネルシアターを見ながら、節分の由来や「鬼は外・福は内」に込められた意味を学び、日本の行事に親しみました。お話の後には、節分にまつわる〇×クイズにも挑戦し、「どっちかな？」と考えながら、楽しそうに答える子どもたちの姿が見られました。

Through a panel theatre presentation, the children learned about the origins of Setsubun and the meaning behind the phrase “Oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi” (“Out with the demons, in with good fortune”). After the story, they enjoyed a true-or-false quiz about Setsubun, eagerly thinking, “Which one could it be?” and answering with excitement.

鬼の的をめがけて力一杯「鬼は外！」と豆をまき、季節の節目を感じました。
Aiming at the oni target, the children threw their beans with all their strength, calling out “Oni wa soto!” and experiencing the spirit of this seasonal tradition.

小さな手で豆をぎゅっと握り、「えいっ！」と一生懸命豆まきに挑戦していました。
With their little hands tightly gripping the beans, the children bravely tried their best, shouting “Ei!” as they enthusiastically took part in bean-throwing.

鬼の登場にドキドキしながらの豆まきタイム！笑顔と歓声に包まれた、にぎやかなひとときとなりました。
With hearts pounding at the appearance of the oni, the bean-throwing began! It was a lively and joyful moment filled with smiles and cheers.

大きいクラスでは、「怒りんぼ鬼」「好き嫌い鬼」「お寝坊鬼」など、自分の中で直したいことを鬼に見立て、元気いっぱい豆まきをして鬼退治に取り組みました。また小さいクラスでは、鬼の顔の的に向かって豆まきを行い、的当てゲームとして楽しみました。豆は事前に子どもたちが紙を丸めてたくさん用意しました。

「鬼をやっつけるには豆がたくさんいるね！」「もっと硬く丸めて丈夫な豆にしよう！」と一生懸命準備する様子も見られました。

In the older classes, the children reflected on things they would like to improve, such as being an “angry oni,” a “picky eater oni,” or a “sleepy oni.” They imagined these habits as oni and energetically threw beans to drive them away. In the younger classes, the children tossed beans at a target featuring an oni’s face, enjoying it as a fun aiming game. The beans were prepared in advance by the children, who carefully rolled paper into small balls. We heard them say, “We need lots of beans to defeat the oni!” and “Let’s roll them tighter to make strong beans!”

豆をお箸でつまんで運ぶ、豆運びゲームも楽しみました。
The children also enjoyed a bean-carrying game, carefully picking up beans with chopsticks and transferring them one by one.

節分に関する◯×クイズでは、お友達と相談しながら大喜びで参加する姿が見られました。
During the true-or-false quiz about Setsubun, the children excitedly participated, happily discussing their answers with friends.

最後には子どもたちも大好きな曲、「鬼のパンツ」を踊り、体を思いきり動かしながら楽しい時間を過ごしました。

悪い鬼を追い払い、幸運を呼び込むことができた節分行事。

新たな一年も、子どもたち一人ひとりが笑顔で健やかに成長していくことを願っています。

To conclude, the children danced joyfully to their favourite song, “Oni no Pants,” moving their bodies with great enthusiasm. Through this celebration, they symbolically drove away evil spirits and welcomed good fortune for the year ahead.
