Amidst the vibrant autumn hues, eight families from Kinderland and NurtureStars preschools embarked on an unforgettable journey to Tokyo, Japan. The Japan Autumn Preschool Exchange Programme, organized in collaboration with JACPA Corporation, celebrated the beauty of Japan’s rich cultural heritage. JACPA, Japan’s leading physical education provider for preschools and primary schools, is renowned for its holistic programmes that nurture children’s mental, social, and physical growth.

We were honoured to have JACPA as the planner and host of this enriching experience. Over seven memorable days, our children and families immersed themselves in Japanese customs, etiquette, and language. They also explored Japan’s breathtaking landscapes, creating cherished memories while broadening their cultural understanding.

A major highlight of the experience was visiting a Japanese kindergarten, where local children warmly welcomed our families. Through games and performances, cultural gaps were bridged, fostering connections and forming lasting bonds.

To break the ice, Japanese preschoolers shared their favourite toys, sparking joy among our children. A shared mealtime further strengthened these bonds, creating opportunities for the children to connect and communicate with each other.

The cultural immersion deepened during a stay at Hakushu Village, a serene private accommodation in the Japanese countryside. Families embraced the traditional lifestyle by learning how to set up futons, a key part of Japanese living. The experience included hands-on activities like fishing, grilling their catch, and crafting Hou Tou noodles, a regional delicacy. Every moment provided lessons about tradition, togetherness, and the beauty of simple living.

Our preschooler was over the moon with the fish—a rainbow trout—she caught alongside her father.

Participants also visited a grape farm, savouring the fresh sweetness of handpicked grapes. At Nobeyama Highland Takizawa Farm, families relished horseback riding and a scenic tractor tour through the crisp autumn air. Communal meals in the village dining area added to the experience, where participants embraced Japanese mealtime customs, including punctuality and expressing gratitude by saying ‘itadakimasu” (to humbly receive)

The programme was more than just a trip; it was a transformative experience. Through interactions with Japanese children, our Singapore preschoolers were introduced to various cultural practices, such as different ways of greeting, eating, and socialising. This exposure fostered an early appreciation and respect for cultural differences, helping them recognise communication barriers and overcome them with respect and sensitivity.

Aligned with Kinderland’s Character Building curriculum, the exchange encouraged values like curiosity, respect, and open-mindedness. It taught young learners to embrace diversity and form meaningful connections with people from different backgrounds

As the Japan Autumn Preschool Exchange Programme ended, it left a lasting impact on every participant. The journey exceeded cultural exploration; it became a celebration of friendship, learning, and shared experiences. Families returned with stronger bonds, enriched perspectives, and unforgettable memories of a week bridging cultures and hearts.

This programme showcased Kinderland and NurtureStars’ commitment to holistic education, fostering values that prepare children for a diverse, interconnected world. Reflecting on the experience, one family, Mr. and Mrs. Kwan, shared, “The Hakushu village stay, and exchange were the best moments, giving us a unique and unforgettable experience.”
