For Hari Raya Puasa this year, Kinderland has gone the extra mile to create a vibrant and culturally enriching atmosphere for our children. At Kinderland, we celebrate Singapore’s diverse cultures, and we are thrilled to celebrate Hari Raya Puasa, a cherished occasion in the Muslim community. From enjoying traditional Hari Raya “kueh” (pasteries), trying out traditional music instruments, and donning beautiful Baju Melayu and Baju Kurung, children of Kinderland enjoyed a variety of exciting and educational activities to celebrate Hari Raya Puasa 2024!
Traditional Hari Raya Delicacies
Children of Kinderland were treated to an amazing array of Hari Raya delicacies ranging from traditional “kuehs” and dishes. Children of Kinderland Preschool @ Woodlands Civic Centre were introduced to a variety of traditional Hari Raya kueh including lepat pisang, tepung pelita, and kueh lapis. Traditionally, these “kuehs” are sweet and savoury treats shared between families and friends to celebrate the festive day and form stronger bonds with one another.
Children of Kinderland Preschool @ Ministry of Manpower enjoyed traditional Hari Raya “kueh” such as goreng pisang and ondeh ondeh. They also enjoyed kuah lemak, a rich coconut gravy that is often served with ketupat on Hari Raya.
Traditional Music Instruments
Children of Kinderland Preschool @ Ministry of Manpower also got to try their hands at the traditional music instrument of kompang. Kompang is a traditional Malay drum, and is a staple among the Malay-Muslim community when celebrating festivities such as Hari Raya and weddings.
Children of Kinderland Preschool @ Sengkang had a fun time playing and learning more about different variations of the gasing. Gasing is a percussion instrument filled with seeds and beads, and is often used by the Malay-Muslim community in performances during Hari Raya celebrations.
Children of Kinderland Preschool @ Marine Parade and Kinderland Preschool @ Woodlands Mart experimented with the anklung, a traditional Indonesian percussion instrument made of bamboo tubes. It holds cultural significance among Indonesia Muslims who often play the instrument to add joy and vibrancy to festivities such as Hari Raya.
Fun with Ketupats and Wau Bulans
Children of Kinderland Preschool @ Sengkang had a ball of a time expressing their creative side when designing their very own ketupats. Using green and yellow stickers, traditional colours of the ketupat, our children pieced together a ketupat design on a paper template given to them.
Children of Kinderland Preschool @ Ministry of National Development had a fun time learning about the Wau Bulan, a traditional Malay-Muslim kite. The kite takes its shape from the crescent moon which is used by the Muslim community as an indicator of the starting and ending days of the fasting month of Ramadan.
Traditional Games
Children of Kinderland Preschool @ Marine Parade and Kinderland Preschool @ Woodlands Mart were exposed to traditional games often played by the Malay-Muslim community to celebrate Hari Raya. This included games such as sepak takraw, chapteh, and gasing.
Our children had an engaging and educational time learning more about the different ways in celebrations of Hari Raya. We look forward to welcoming our children for our festivities and activities in celebrating Hari Raya next year!
