The mural titled ‘Building Our Nation Over Generations’ stands as a vibrant tribute to multiculturalism, boldness, resilience and openness. This is the Largest Mural Made of Reused Plastics as awarded by Singapore Book of Records. Conceptualised by Artist, Fadhlin AG, Crestar Learning Centre’s Art Programme Head, the mural is a striking visual celebration of Singapore’s 60-year journey—honouring our nation’s progress, resilience, and collective identity. The artwork features vibrant depictions of national milestones, cultural icons, and beloved mascots, reflecting the SG60 theme: “Building Our Singapore Together – Let’s connect, contribute, and show we care.”
With creativity, the mural serves as an educational project to educate young children about the importance of reducing plastic waste.
This mural was officially completed by Ms Goh Hanyan, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment & the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, together with Mr Seet Lee Kiang, General Manager, Kinderland Singapore, Mr Lam Sheau Kai, President, SMRT Trains, Mr John Ng, Chief Executive Officer, YTL PowerSeraya Pte. Limited., and Ms Karen Wee, Executive Director, Lions Befrienders Service Association Singapore.
Ms Goh Hanyan, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment & the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, completed the art mural together with representatives from Kinderland, SMRT, YTL PowerSeraya and Lions Befrienders.
The art mural is awarded the Largest Mural Made of Reused Plastics by Singapore Book of Records.
The idea of the mural was born from a commitment to meaningfully engage children and families in sustainability. As part of SG60’s theme, Building Our Singapore Together, the mural serves as a symbolic and educational project — teaching young minds about the importance of reducing plastic waste. Through this initiative, children learn to repurpose still-usable toys by donating them, recycle broken ones for mural materials, and rethink their purchases to reduce excessive consumption.
A total of over 420kg of plastic toys were collected across our 51 KIE centres in Singapore.
As Singapore urbanised over the past 60 years, plastic waste, like the rest of the world, has been on the rise. In 2023, Singapore’s plastic waste accounted for 14 per cent of our total waste, weighing approximately 957,000 metric tons, of which only 5% was recycled. (NEA, n.d.)
The global toy industry plays a significant role in the global plastic pollution crisis. For every $1 million in revenue, it consumes an astounding 40 tons of plastic, making it the most plastic-intensive sector in the world. Around 90% of toys on the market are plastic, further exacerbating the growing plastic waste problem. While recycling may seem like a straightforward fix, it is not that simple. Many plastic toys are crafted from a combination of materials, such as PVC, ABS, or polycarbonate, which complicates the recycling process and makes it less efficient. (Atmos, 2022)
Did you know? The toy industry is the world’s most plastic-intensive sector, with 90% of toys made from plastic—contributing significantly to global plastic pollution.
Through education, we can influence our young children to be more mindful of their purchases and disposal. By instilling these values in our children from a young age, we prepare the next generation to live more sustainably.
The project brought together over 5,000 preschoolers, and more than 5,000 family members and educators across five of Kinderland International Education (KIE) Singapore’s early childhood brands (Kinderland, ELFA, NurtureStars, Skool4Kidz and The Grange International Preschool) —showcasing the power of community and intergenerational collaboration. The process involves donating and collecting pre-loved plastic toys, dismantling the toy parts, sorting the plastic waste by colour, painting and attaching the plastic waste to the mural panel. This mural took six weeks to complete.
More than 10,000 preschoolers, families, and educators from five KIE brands came together to transform pre-loved plastic toys into a meaningful mural—showcasing the power of community, creativity, and sustainability.
This project not only educated our young – but also influenced their families to learn to repurpose plastic waste. Secondary partners from SMRT, YTL PowerSeraya, and Lions Befrienders — whose belief in the power of art has been a part of this journey in making this vision a reality. Through our joint efforts across various communities, we have repurposed at least 35% of the over 420kg of plastic waste. We hope this mural will continue to inspire you and others likewise for years to come.
This initiative was conceived with a dual purpose: to instil sustainable habits in young children and to celebrate Singapore’s 60-year journey of nation-building. Spearheaded by KIE and supported by all its five early education brands, Kinderland, ELFA, NurtureStars, Skool4Kidz and The Grange International Preschool, the project was introduced across 51 preschools, engaging over 5,000 preschoolers and more than 5,000 family members and educators.
This meaningful initiative was designed to nurture sustainable habits in our young learners and help them understand the importance of conserving resources — starting from their earliest years.
Drawing inspiration from SG60’s theme of connect, contribute and care, KIE envisioned a large-scale art mural that embraces sustainability. The KIE team and Artist, Fadhlin AG began with conceptual discussions, identifying meaningful national icons that would represent Singapore’s shared values of multiculturalism, openness and resilience. To support this vision, our preschoolers and their families were invited to contribute pre-loved plastic toys – transforming them into creative resources for the mural.
The KIE team and Artist, Fadhlin AG, drawing the outline of the artwork on 51 individual panels of the mural.
This marked the beginning of a project rooted in education, collaboration and environmental stewardship.
With strong community support, donations of pre-loved toys flowed in. These items were carefully dismantled, with unusable components responsibly disposed of and reusable parts sorted by colour. Educators and preschoolers then collaborated to prepare the mural’s base, painting it and gradually assembling the toy pieces into place, based on their colours and shapes.
Preschoolers from Pre-Nursery 1 to Kindergarten 2 contributed to the donation of pre-loved toys and sorted them by colour.
This phase also saw intergeneration bonding between Lions Befrienders, YTL PowerSeraya and Kinderland – working together to bring this vision to life through a structured and inclusive approach. The seniors from Lions Befrienders and volunteers from YTL PowerSeraya came together in creating the centre piece of the mural together with preschoolers from Kinderland Preschool @ Ministry of National Development.
Intergenerational bonding is evident as seniors from Lions Befrienders, YTL PowerSeraya volunteers and Kinderland Preschool children came together to create the centrepiece of the mural.
As the mural took shape, each piece contributed to a collective narrative – one that celebrates Singapore’s growth through the eyes and hands of its youngest citizens.
The mural is a testament to what can be achieved when communities unite around a common purpose. Every preschool, every child and every educator played a part in assembling a powerful symbol of environmental stewardship and national pride.
The final artwork stands not only as a striking visual installation but also as a meaningful representation of the SG60 spirit – where small actions contribute to significant impact. Structurally supported and carefully assembled, the mural exemplifies how individual dreams and efforts, when aligned, can produce remarkable outcomes.
On 2 July 2025, the project was officially recognised by the Singapore Book of Records as the Largest Mural Made of Reused Plastics. More than an achievement, this recognition underscores the role of early childhood education in driving sustainable values and civic responsibility.
From tiny hands to guiding hearts, every preschool, child, family, and educator wove together a vibrant tapestry of environmental care and national pride.
We hope to inspire many others and the future generations to take ownership of Singapore’s green journey – and to believe that even the smallest hands can shape a more sustainable world.

Teamy, the productivity bee, was first introduced as the mascot for Singapore’s national productivity campaign in 1982. The bee was chosen because it symbolises industriousness and teamwork—traits strongly associated with productivity. As the campaign evolved to emphasise not just productivity but also innovation, Teamy was updated to carry a lightbulb, symbolising bright and creative ideas. In 1999, Teamy was retired and replaced by an “i” icon to continue promoting productivity. However, for many older Singaporeans, Teamy remains memorable—especially its catchy slogan: “Good, better, best! Never let it rest. Till the good is better, and the better best!”

Kindness is in everyone. The Singapore Kindness Movement (SKM) aspires to inspire everyone to live kinder — through our actions, words and thoughts. Because no matter how small these kind acts may be, by building on them, we can create a greater and more gracious society together.
